Chromatic Nova

Inspired to try Mr Velocipede's chromatic rainbow technique on some detailed novas I found a few things that didn't work very well, and one spot that did seem intriguing (even if the bands are out of order - this is roughly GRB, not RGB):





The only difference between the layers (of which there are 3) is the color, which is either red, green or blue, and the iteration limit.
